A termite infestation is every homeowner’s nightmare, as these annoying wood-eating pests can cause significant structural damage. The good news is that there is one way to spot a termite infestation: termite tubes.
Most Central Texans have at least heard of termites, even if they’ve never had to have an infestation treated. These small, winged, ant-like pests can cause major damage by feeding on the wood that makes up our homes and other structures. How do termites eat wood? It seems unlikely that such tiny insects could cause much trouble. But they do: Termites cause about five billion dollars in damage to American homes every single year!
If you hear a faint, tapping sound coming from within your walls or elsewhere in your otherwise silent home, you might suspect it’s an unwanted pest and then wonder, “What could be making this noise? Do termites make noise?” Well, yes and no.
You were always aware of termites—even nervous about what would happen if these destructive pests got into your home. At the same time, your worry never really rose to the level of something you were actively worried about. After all, there were no signs of issues in your house. Then, one day, while gardening, you noticed what looked like termite tubes in your yard. You did a little poking around and—yep—definitely termites. Or are they?
